Trump bans CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico would be banned from the White House, citing their "constant 'reporting' of fake news". In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that the media outlets were not allowed "effective immediately". The ban was not specified to include the media outlets' credentials or access to White House events, but other media organizations could follow suit.

Later that day, Trump defended the decision in an Oval Office event, stating that journalists intentionally publish negative stories to diminish his Republican administration. This move is part of Trump's ongoing contentious relationship with the news media, where he frequently engages directly with journalists while attacking others for unfavorable coverage.

The issue is particularly relevant ahead of the midterm elections, where control of Congress is at stake. The White House has a history of restricting access to journalists, most notably in February 2025 when the Associated Press journalists were barred from the Oval Office, Air Force One, and other events after the news agency refused to use the administration's preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico.

Media organizations in the US are protected by the First Amendment, and the Trump administration has sued several outlets over alleged defamation, with some cases settling for millions of dollars.
