Today in sports history, November 14

On November 14, a number of significant moments occurred in the world of sports. In 1943, Chicago Bears quarterback Sid Luckman set an NFL record with seven touchdown passes and 433 passing yards against the New York Giants. Two years later, in 1964, Gordie Howe broke Maurice Richard's combined NHL goal total. Tragedy struck in 1970 when a plane carrying Marshall University's football team, coaches, and supporters crashed near Huntington, West Virginia, killing all 75 people on board.

The following year, Gerry Cheevers of the Boston Bruins began a 32-game unbeaten streak, which remains an NHL record. In 1979, 26-year-old Gary Green became the youngest head coach in NHL history when he took the reins of the Washington Capitals. Jay Sigel of the U.S. Mid-Amateur won four USGA championships within four years in 1985.
