Tinubu Orders Probe Into Deaths Of Suspected Illegal Miners Detained By NSCDC In Niger

President Bola Tinubu has directed a thorough and open investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners who were detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) during operations near the Lt. Gen. Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Estate in Minna, Niger State. In a statement released by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized the government's zero-tolerance for deaths caused by official negligence and promised that no responsible official would escape punishment.

The president instructed relevant authorities to conduct an exhaustive, transparent, and unrestricted inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the arrests, the state of the detainees at the time of their custody, the conditions during their detention, the count of individuals confined in the facility, the medical care provided, and the events resulting in their deaths.

Tinubu clarified that while the suspension of officers is merely an administrative measure, it should not hinder the pursuit of criminal accountability when warranted by the evidence.

The government chief underscored the significance of every Nigerian life, asserting that no citizen should lose their life due to negligence, abuse, inhumane treatment, or dereliction of duty while under government custody. He expressed deep concern over the reported fatalities, labeling the incident as a critical issue requiring immediate investigation and accountability.

Tinubu stressed that while the government will pursue illegal mining and other criminal activities, any enforcement actions must strictly adhere to the law and respect the dignity and fundamental rights of individuals in custody.

According to the president, the fact that the detainees were suspected of illegal mining does not negate their right to life, dignity, and humane treatment while in government custody. If the investigation reveals any official complicity in the deaths through action, abuse, or negligence, such personnel must be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.

Tinubu also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and requested for calm among the families and communities affected by the tragedy, assuring them that the Federal Government would uncover the truth and implement appropriate actions based on credible evidence. He reiterated that the sanctity of human life is non-negotiable and that the government must enforce the law firmly while adhering to the law itself.
