Feroz Khan flagged as an outlier over R3m external income: Fikeni

The Madlanga Commission in Pretoria heard that former Crime Intelligence Deputy Head Feroz Khan was identified as an "outlier" due to his substantial external income of approximately R3 million per year. PSC Chairperson Somadoda Fikeni concluded his testimony before the commission. Fikeni informed the commission that the PSC raised concerns while reviewing financial disclosures submitted by senior police officials.

Advocate Matthew Chaskalson led Fikeni's evidence. Fikeni noted that only Feroz Khan, whose financial disclosures have been made public, earns over R1 million annually from external remunerative work. He emphasized the need to question the standing of these individuals in the system. Fikeni also expressed concerns about South Africa's vetting system, stating that some officials only learn their vetting outcomes at the end of their terms.

This inconsistency in vetting could potentially lead to misuse of the process for political or administrative gains. Fikeni concurred with Commissioner Sandile Khumalo's view that officials appointed to positions with access to classified information and national security responsibilities should undergo thorough vetting.
