This invasive species has just been found in Canada for the 1st time

Invasive spotted lanternfly, a destructive pest originating from southeast Asia, has been detected for the first time in Canada in Windsor, Ontario, on September 15, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The spotted lanternfly, which was first discovered in North America in 2014 in Pennsylvania, feeds on more than 100 different plant species and can damage grapevines, potentially impacting the grape and wine industries.

It primarily feeds on native hardwood and fruit trees, including the invasive tree-of-heaven, while also targeting black walnut trees. The Invasive Species Centre has issued movement restrictions and initiated surveillance to determine the extent of infestations, emphasizing the importance of reporting sightings for early detection and containment.

Members of the public can help by learning to identify the insect in various life stages, taking photos, and reporting any sightings to the CFIA. Preventing the spread involves checking vehicles and camping equipment for egg masses and adhering to firewood regulations by purchasing and burning local wood.
