Tamil Nadu gold ring for newborns: CM Vijay to launch scheme on Sep 28; 1.28L pieces ready for phase 1—check eligibility

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay of Tamil Nadu is scheduled to introduce a new scheme on September 28 that will provide newborns with one-gram gold rings. The government has acquired 1.28 lakh rings for the initial phase of the program. These rings will be distributed to infants born in government-run hospitals throughout the state.

Each ring will have a unique serial number and will be securely packaged. This initiative, known as the Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam (Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme), is a significant campaign for the ruling TVK party. It will be administered at the time of the baby's discharge from the hospital. The scheme will apply to all districts, except Chengalpattu and Tiruppur, which host upcoming bypolls on October 6.

To qualify, mothers must be Tamil Nadu residents, registered under the PICME system, and possess an RCH identification card. The state government had issued tenders for 4.41 lakh 22-carat gold rings, which will be distributed in four phases, with the first phase comprising 1.28 lakh pieces. A Government Order outlining the scheme's implementation was issued on June 23, 2026.

The program was initially planned for September 15, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Dravidian leader CN Annadurai, but was delayed due to Vijay's UK trip to promote investments.
