Sacramento Sikh truck driver survives being stabbed 17 times at Wyoming rest stop

On Sunday morning, a 28-year-old Punjabi Sikh truck driver named Singh was brutally stabbed 17 times in a men's restroom at the Bitter Creek Rest Area on Interstate 80, Wyoming. The attack was described as completely unprovoked by the victim, who had used the same rest stop many times before without incident. Singh was traveling toward Pennsylvania when he stopped at the rest area around 3 a.m. and entered the restroom to look in the mirror.

A man came up behind him, punched him in the head and neck, pushed him against the wall, and stabbed him with a blue knife multiple times in the arms, chest, rib cage, and neck. Singh fought back, managed to exit the restroom, called 911, and collapsed outside on the pavement. He was airlifted to Wyoming Medical Center in Casper with multiple lacerations and injuries to his chest and ribs.

The attack occurred just days after a controversial post from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on social media, which featured an image of a brown-skinned, bearded man labeled "Mr. Singh" and messages threatening immigrants to leave the roads. The DHS post was deleted after widespread criticism. A Hispanic family in the rest area witnessed the attack and helped catch the suspect, providing crucial information to the police.

The incident has heightened safety concerns among South Asian and Sikh truck drivers, who make up about 35% of California's commercial drivers. Advocates emphasized that the attack happened in a climate where the U.S. government uses a Sikh name and image to dehumanize and threaten the community. U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi called the stabbing part of "rising hatred targeting Sikh and South Asian Americans."
