S. Korea, Indonesia agree to expand partnerships in halal certification

South Korea and Indonesia have reached an agreement to bolster their partnerships in halal certification, according to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Seoul. The two nations signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) during the Halal Summit 20 in Depok, Indonesia. Halal certification is a process that verifies products, ingredients, and manufacturing processes adhere to Islamic law.

Indonesia, recognized as one of the world's largest halal markets, is set to expand the scope of mandatory halal certification, which includes foods and cosmetics. This certification will become compulsory starting next month.

This agreement is a follow-up to the elevation of bilateral relations to a "special comprehensive strategic partnership" during President Lee Jae Myung's visit to Indonesia in March, as confirmed by the drug ministry.
