Russian hybrid attacks against Europe intensifying, says Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed concern that Russia's hybrid attacks against Europe and France are becoming more frequent. During a press conference at the Elysee Palace, Macron urged the French government to develop a plan to safeguard critical infrastructure and defense sector sites from such threats. He confirmed that France had experienced Russian hybrid attacks in recent weeks, which would not go unanswered.

Several European leaders have raised concerns that Russia may be testing their commitment to supporting Ukraine through potential attacks. Macron referenced a drone strike on Leipzig Airport in Germany last month, which he attributed to Russia, as well as Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's remarks about Russia planning drone and missile strikes on Poland and other NATO countries in Eastern Europe.

The president emphasized that the aim of Russia's hybrid threat is to intimidate Europe and undermine support for Ukraine, but assured the audience that Europe was not cowed, as its security is directly tied to the outcome in Ukraine. He announced that the French government would be responsible for protecting critical infrastructure and sensitive defense industry facilities from drone and cyberattacks.

Additionally, Macron stated that France would convene a G7 meeting to address energy concerns and discuss gas stocks with the European Commission. In the coming weeks, a G7 summit will focus on energy issues, aiming to enhance cooperation and prevent tensions between G7 nations and their key partners. Macron also hinted at the possibility of releasing strategic reserves during the summit.
