Riyadh event helps nations shape AI policy tools

Saudi Arabia organized a side event during the UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Riyadh to assist nations in crafting AI policies that align with their unique priorities and digital capabilities. Joined by the OECD and GPAI, the event took place from September 14 to 17, 2026. Its goal was to facilitate the creation and execution of AI policies suited to each country's economic and cultural environment, promoting both innovation and human rights protection.

The OECD unveiled its specialized policy platform, detailing its utilization, and shared insights from collaborative workshops and user experiences. This platform provides countries with resources and guidance customized to their distinct circumstances, aiding in the effective implementation of AI principles. Delegates engaged in hands-on working groups, leveraging the platform to establish priorities, evaluate existing policies, pinpoint deficiencies, and scrutinize relevant international precedents.

The discussions centered on the obstacles encountered in crafting and executing AI policies, underscoring the necessity for enhanced guidance, resources, and international collaboration. Participants shared valuable feedback and recommendations to refine the existing tools, ensuring they more closely align with the specific requirements of their respective nations.

This event was among several side activities accompanying the forum, which was orchestrated by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) in collaboration with UNESCO and ICARE, involving policymakers, experts, researchers, and international bodies.
