Penjara Kajang has once again become the focal point for media following the conditional pardon granted to former Prime Minister Najib Razak. On the morning of August 8, media gathered outside Penjara Kajang, waiting for any updates on the latest developments regarding Najib's status. Earlier, the Federal Corporate Territory Trustee Authority (LPWP) confirmed that Najib had been granted conditional pardon to serve the remainder of his prison sentence at home. However, as of now, there has been no movement from any party, including Najib's family members.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Department Welfare Division, the home confinement granted to Najib is contingent upon his payment of a RM50 million fine if he is an ex-member of parliament. Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim has approved the conditional pardon for Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence in home confinement until August 23, 2028, provided he adheres to the set conditions.

Failure to comply with any conditions will result in the conditional pardon being revoked, and the remaining sentence will be resumed in prison, as stated by the monarch.

However, the statement did not disclose if there are any other conditions that Najib needs to meet to receive the conditional pardon. Currently serving a six-year prison sentence at Penjara Kajang, Najib's sentence was reduced to 18 years by the Federal Corporate Territory Trustee Authority (LPWP) in February 2024, a reduction of half the original sentence.

The original fine of RM210 million was also reduced to RM50 million. Najib was imprisoned in August 2022 following the dismissal of his final appeal in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

In December 2025, Najib was charged with wrongdoings, including misuse of power and embezzlement of funds, involving over RM2 billion linked to the 1MDB scandal. He faces a 15-year prison sentence and a fine of RM11.38 billion. Najib is currently seeking clemency.
