Hadi rejects separate state polls for SG4 states

In Marang, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has dismissed the idea of separate state elections in the SG4 grouping of states, which includes Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, and Perlis. Hadi believes these elections should be held simultaneously with the 16th General Election (GE16). He made this stance clear when commenting on Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan's suggestion that Perikatan Nasional (PN) demonstrate its commitment to political cooperation by allocating seats in the SG4 state elections.

Hadi, who is also the MP for Marang, urged PN leaders to ponder if there was a necessity to disband the state assemblies in the four states. He maintained that there is no requirement to conduct separate state elections; instead, he proposed holding the general election concurrently. In the 2015 GE15, Perlis, administrated by Barisan Nasional, conducted its state election concurrently with the parliamentary election.

Kedah, Terengganu, and Kelantan held their state elections alongside Selangor, Negri Sembilan, and Penang in 2023. Hadi also expressed gratitude towards the Umno leadership for their readiness to engage in negotiations with PAS ahead of the upcoming general election. He emphasized that PAS prioritizes Malay-Muslim leadership, followed by non-extremist non-Muslims, as their struggle concept is quite similar to that of Umno.

Reports had previously suggested that Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki indicated that the party's approach was becoming more apparent based on the views expressed by delegates at the recent Umno General Assembly, with a stronger inclination towards negotiations with PAS leadership. Regarding other parties within PN, such as Wawasan, Hadi mentioned that it is up to their respective leaders to decide whether to engage in negotiations.
