PH: No one above law, convicted offenders must serve sentences

Putrajaya: The Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council today emphasized that no one is above the law and that convicted offenders must serve their sentences as per the Federal Constitution and applicable laws. The council reaffirmed its support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's stance, as well as the Attorney-General and Federal Territories Minister's advice to the Pardons Board.

According to the council, every individual is subject to the law and those found guilty must fulfill their punishment accordingly. The council reiterated its commitment to combating corruption, advancing the Reformasi agenda, and purging the nation of corruption and misappropriation. The council's stance comes in response to recent political developments, including the decision permitting former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to complete his sentence under conditional house arrest.

This move has sparked debate within Umno, potentially reigniting the "Bossku" sentiment among the party's grassroots and increasing pressure on Umno to defend its former leader more forcefully. The PH Presidential Council's meeting follows comments by BN chairman and Umno president Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who criticized those advocating for the party to cease its cooperation with the unity government.

Zahid urged either the dissolution of Parliament to prepare for the 16th general election (GE16) or a motion of no confidence against the government in the Dewan Rakyat. His remarks have further fueled discussions regarding BN's role in the unity government and the coalition's future. DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke urged Anwar to convene the PH Presidential Council meeting promptly to discuss recent political issues, citing statements by Anwar as detrimental to the country's political stability.
