Saifuddin Abdullah emphasizes the broad role of consensus-building in Islam, beyond mere political or administrative matters. The National Unity Party (Wawasan) Deputy Secretary-General explained that meaningful consensus is crucial for preventing decisions from being influenced by personal bias or authoritarian tendencies. The practice of consensus-building or group deliberation is increasingly common, although its application sometimes suffers from misinterpretation and room for improvement.

According to the former minister, consensus or consultation involves more than just seeking information; it encompasses gathering perspectives and making informed decisions before any action is taken. "Clearly, the demand for conducting consultations is quite high... It is a fundamental principle in leadership and governance," he wrote in Sinar Harian's 'Crossing Spaces' section.

Saifuddin noted that this concept has wide-ranging applications in Islam, not limited to politics or administration, but also used in family and community life. He highlighted that history shows Islam has also employed consensus in making various decisions, including those related to governance and community affairs. Some benefits of consensus-building include producing accurate or optimal decisions while avoiding subjective tyranny and personal interests.

It also helps prevent authoritarianism and personal greed, while ensuring the rights of all parties are respected. Proper consensus-building fosters an environment that encourages freedom and participation in decision-making processes. "Enriching the atmosphere of freedom and initiative," he stated when listing among the advantages of consensus.

Saifuddin also said that such processes can enhance critical thinking and planning abilities, as well as readiness to act and provide support for the decision made. Moreover, he added, consensus can strengthen relationships among the parties involved and help cultivate a sense of shared responsibility for the decision made. "It can increase cooperation and unity," he concluded.
