PAS welcomes Najib house arrest, says he still has plenty to offer

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) commended the Sultan of Malaysia for issuing a conditional pardon to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, stating that he can still offer his insights and experience to the nation. PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan expressed gratitude for the monarch's decision to allow Najib to complete his remaining sentence under house arrest, contingent on a RM50 million fine payment until August 23, 2028.

In a statement, Takiyuddin emphasized that this decision holds great significance for Najib's family and Malaysians who remember and value his leadership and the economic growth he facilitated during his tenure. The PAS leader also wished for Najib's continued good health during his time at home serving the remainder of his sentence.

The conditional pardon was granted following the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories, held at Istana Negara on Sept 18. According to the Prime Minister's Department's Legal Affairs Division, Najib, 73, must adhere to the conditions set forth; otherwise, the pardon will be revoked, and he will be required to serve the remaining time in prison.

The former premier has been incarcerated at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, after being convicted in the SRC International case involving RM42 million. His initial 12-year sentence was reduced to six years in 2024, with the fine reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.
