Nigeria: Bago constitutes panel over death of miners in custody, declares 24-Hour curfew in Minna after protest

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has declared a 24-hour curfew in Minna, the state capital, after unrest erupted in parts of the city. The curfew, which began immediately after Friday prayers, will remain in effect until further notice. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary movement during the period. Security forces have been instructed to enforce the curfew and ensure public safety.

The unrest was sparked by the protest over the deaths of suspected illegal miners who were reportedly killed while in custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Governor Bago established a committee of inquiry to investigate the circumstances of the deaths, which occurred in the Minna prison cells. The NSCDC commandant and his team have been suspended during the investigation. The cause of the deaths remains unknown, but investigations are focusing on suffocation due to overcrowding and exposure to hazardous chemicals used in illegal mining. Forensic and medical examinations are being conducted to determine the exact cause.

The illegal mining site in the MiOshishi area has been closed, as the mining operations were conducted without proper safety equipment and technology. Governor Bago appealed for calm, noting that the movement of the bodies to the mortuary had triggered emotional reactions and violence among some youths. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident and directed the NSCDC Commandant General to cooperate with the panel of inquiry.

The Federal Government has also expressed condolences to the Niger State government, traditional leaders, and the families of the deceased miners.
