Nexperia to partner with Tata on chip production, packaging in India

On September 17, Tata Electronics announced five strategic partnerships aimed at bolstering India's semiconductor ecosystem. The deals span various layers of the value chain, from wafer fabrication and assembly to workforce development and indigenization.

At the forefront is Tata's partnership with Dutch semiconductor major Nexperia. The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration in three key areas: front-end wafer fabrication, back-end assembly and testing, and technology and ecosystem development. Tata Electronics will manufacture Nexperia's MOSFET portfolio at its upcoming 300mm Fab in Dholera, Gujarat, while Nexperia's discrete semiconductor products will be assembled and tested at its packaging facility in Jagiroad, Assam.

Dr. Randhir Thakur, Tata Electronics' CEO, expressed excitement about the collaboration, which aligns with the growing technology and trade relationship between India and the European Union.

Other partnerships unveiled on the same day include Fujifilm's investment in semiconductor materials around Tata's Dholera Fab, with the Japanese company planning to inject roughly INR 800 crore (US$83 million) into a new materials plant. Besi, a Dutch assembly-equipment leader, will supply advanced packaging technologies at Tata's US$3 billion Jagiroad facility.

Tata Electronics also partnered with India's only Integrated Device Manufacturing facility, SCL, to advance semiconductor indigenization efforts, focusing on design, technology, supply-chain localization, and talent development. Lastly, Tata Electronics signed an MoU with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya, a central university, to build a skilled talent pipeline for chip manufacturing.
