New-look Wales target statement South Africa win

This Friday marks the ninth encounter between Wales and South Africa, as the two teams clash in their WXV Global Series opener at Cardiff Arms Park. While Wales have won six of their eight previous matches, their recent form has taken a turn for the worse, with nine consecutive Test losses dropping them to 13th in the world rankings.

Meanwhile, South Africa has climbed to 10th following their first-ever Rugby World Cup quarter-final appearance last summer and recent victories over Fiji and USA. Both sides are expected to give a physical display, with each team aiming to make a statement win to kick off their respective campaigns. The WXV Global Series, launched by World Rugby, features the top 12 ranked national teams playing home and away matches throughout September and October, culminating in two Tests against Japan.

Wales head coach Sean Lynn has opted to make several changes, including moving Keira Bevan to fly-half and fielding three debutants in the starting lineup. South Africa captain Babalwa Latsha, who made her debut against Wales five years ago, is expected to start at scrum-half, alongside Sevens-star Maria Tshiremba and Maceala Samboya.

Both coaches have emphasized the importance of backing their players and adapting to new game plans, recognizing that victory will come down to a closely contested contest.
