Golf 8.5 R still on Volkswagen South Africa’s wishlist but…

Volkswagen South Africa has not abandoned its plans to introduce the Golf 8.5 R to the South African market, despite the vehicle currently being off the table. This was confirmed following the pricing reveal of the Golf 8.5 GTI at last year's Kyalami Festival of Motoring. An executive at the time stated that any announcement regarding the R's availability would only be made once approval is granted.

Speculation around the delay of the Golf R's release has pointed towards the engine's inability to operate effectively on South Africa's fuel quality, which is not as high as in Europe. This same concern is believed to have delayed the unveiling of the GTI to South African audiences, prompting a debut only at the end of 2025 with a predicted 2027 arrival.

At the August Kyalami Festival of Motoring, Volkswagen reiterated that it is actively working on a plan to make the Golf R accessible to South African consumers. However, no further specifics or an estimated release date were disclosed.

Engine-wise, the Golf R utilizes the EA888evo 2.0 TSI, with its power output increased from 195kW/370Nm to 245kW/420Nm. The R's all-wheel drive system is powered by a seven-speed DSG, with a claimed top speed of 250km/h and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.6 seconds. The optional Performance Package does not alter the sprint time but extends the top speed to 270km/h.

While the GTI received structural and mechanical changes, the R's only updates include the addition of a Drift mode and a 'Special' setting based on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

An official confirmation of the Golf R's debut in South Africa is expected once approval for its market entry is secured.
