Miners’ Deaths: IGP Disu visits Niger, vows to uncover what happened to 37 suspects

Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, travelled to Niger State to launch a comprehensive investigation into the tragic deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while under the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). During his visit to Minna, Disu met with Governor Umar Bago at the government house, expressing his commitment to determining the circumstances surrounding the incident and assuring the public of the police's dedication to uncovering the truth.

The IGP stated that deaths occurring in custody fall under the investigative responsibilities of the Nigeria Police Force, emphasizing the seriousness of the case due to the number of victims. He appealed for calm from residents, warning against any violent responses and emphasized that his force would maintain its independence and integrity throughout the investigation.

Police patrols were increased in the affected areas to prevent further unrest and protect lives and property. The incident occurred after security forces conducted enforcement operations against suspected illegal mining activities around the Wushishi-Lukoto axis of Niger State. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, ordered a full-scale investigation, and Governor Bago imposed a 24-hour curfew following protests and reports of property damage.

The Federal Government has directed a transparent investigation, with any culpable official facing arrest and prosecution. The NSCDC maintains that the cause of the deaths has yet to be established, as medical and forensic examinations continue.
