MIC, MCA thank Agong for Najib’s conditional pardon

Earlier today, leaders of Barisan Nasional component parties MIC and MCA expressed gratitude to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, for granting former Prime Minister Najib Razak a conditional pardon. MIC deputy president M Saravanan praised Najib's contributions to the nation, particularly for the Indian community, noting that his prison sentence was sufficient for someone of his character.

"No one can deny the amount of good things and initiatives the man has done for the nation," Saravanan told FMT. MCA president Wee Ka Siong echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need to distinguish between judicial and pardon processes as separate constitutional procedures. "Respecting the decision of the pardons board does not mean denying the court's decision, just as respecting the court's decision does not mean questioning the power of pardon provided by the constitution," Wee stated on Facebook.

The legal affairs division of the Prime Minister's Department confirmed that Najib has been granted a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve his remaining prison term in house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to payment of a reduced RM50 million fine. Najib, 73, was initially sentenced to six years in prison for the SRC International case, with his original 12-year sentence halved by the Federal Court in February 2024. He had been incarcerated since August 2022 following the dismissal of his final appeal in the case.
