Mahama orders immediate dissolution of National Cathedral Board of Trustees

President John Dramani Mahama has issued an immediate order to dissolve the Board of Trustees managing Ghana’s National Cathedral project. This directive, outlined in a letter dated September 18, 2026, effectively concludes the board's role in overseeing the stalled project. The letter, signed by Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga, instructs the trustees to initiate procedures for transferring the project site to the Ministry, with a deadline of October 31, 2026, to liaise with the project consultant and finalize the handover.

The Ministry stated that assuming control of the site will allow the government to evaluate the project's status and decide its future course of action. The dissolved board, led by Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah, was previously informed of the President’s decision via letters distributed to relevant officials, including the Secretary to the President and the Chief of Staff at Jubilee House.

Mahama Ayariga expressed gratitude to the trustees for their service and their role in promoting Christianity in Ghana. This latest move follows the government's previous efforts to terminate the project, including the dissolution of the board and closure of the Secretariat in July 2025 due to concerns raised in an audit of the project.

The September directive now compels the trustees to hand over the physical site, setting the stage for the government to determine the subsequent steps regarding the National Cathedral project. The letter does not specify the Ministry's final decision on the project's future, leaving the government's ultimate choice open.
