Lee rules out troop deployment involving Korea in Iran war

President Lee Jae Myung has stated that South Korea will not participate in the war involving Iran by deploying troops or military assets. During a press conference, Lee firmly reaffirmed Seoul's principle of noninvolvement, clearly stating, "There will be no deployment that involves or intervenes in the war. I can state that clearly."

The president emphasized that Korea will avoid sending troops or dispatching military assets, reiterating that this stance has been maintained thus far. He affirmed that the country's commitment to this principle remains unchanged.

Nevertheless, Lee acknowledged the need for South Korea to undertake "minimum activities" to safeguard its commercial vessels, crude oil shipping routes, and the lives and safety of its citizens. He recognized that other nations are also engaging in similar protective measures.

Lee recognized the potential for confusion between these protective activities and involvement in the conflict. To address this, the government is considering enhancing the capabilities of the Cheonghae Unit, which is already stationed in waters near the Strait of Hormuz. This unit is responsible for responding to threats to ships, shipping routes, and Korean nationals. Lee stressed, however, that Korea would not send combat forces into the Iranian conflict.
