Lee rules out Korean troop deployment in Iran war

President Lee Jae Myung, of South Korea, ruled out the deployment of the nation's troops or military resources in the ongoing conflict with Iran, reinforcing the country's stance of noninvolvement. During a press conference, Mr. Lee stated unequivocally, "There will be no deployment that involves or intervenes in the war. I can confirm that clearly." He reiterated that Seoul would not engage in such troop deployment or dispatch military assets, maintaining that principle consistently.

However, President Lee did acknowledge the necessity for Korea to undertake "minimum activities" to safeguard its commercial vessels, the shipping routes of crude oil, and the lives and safety of its citizens, as other countries are currently doing. He recognized the potential for blurring the line between these protective measures and direct involvement in the conflict.

In response, the government is contemplating enhancing the operations of the Cheonghae Unit, which is already stationed in waters near the Strait of Hormuz to safeguard ships, shipping routes, and Korean nationals. Nonetheless, Mr. Lee emphasized that Korea would refrain from sending combat forces.
