Lee holds off on justice minister nominee, admits vetting failures

President Lee Jae Myung acknowledged shortcomings in the Cabinet candidate vetting process, stating that he has not yet made a final decision on the nomination of controversial Justice Minister Kim Seung-won. Despite their efforts, unexpected issues continued to emerge during the vetting process, Lee conceded during a press conference at Cheong Wa Dae on Friday. He admitted that "we failed to prepare for those aspects," and said that "we are currently working to reexamine our personnel system."

Facing falling approval ratings due to resistance to his policy proposals and contentious reform initiatives, as well as concerns over his Cabinet nominees, Lee addressed the Justice Minister nominee issue. He said that while they believed they had made the best possible selection, "various controversies have emerged during the public confirmation process" and that they "have not yet reached a final conclusion." Lee added that the administration would make a careful decision, taking public sentiment into account.
