Klopp wants to ‘reclaim’ flag amid German elections

Germany's national team coach Jurgen Klopp expressed his desire to "reclaim the flag" amid recent far-right election victories in Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party secured 43.8% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt, narrowly missing an absolute majority. Klopp, who is not a political expert, emphasized his wish to ensure the flag is "not entrusted to the wrong people" and promote "positive patriotism" over the potentially misunderstood notion of national pride.

The former Liverpool boss stated that being proud of one's German identity should not conflict with embracing diversity, kindness, and friendliness. Klopp also highlighted the importance of football in fostering community and the power of sport. The coach recently announced his 44-man squad for four upcoming Nations League matches, including 16 uncapped players.

Among the notable selections are Premier League stars Kai Havertz, Kevin Schade, and Anton Stach, as well as Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala. The team will face the Netherlands, Greece, Serbia, and Thessaloniki in the next two weeks.
