KATH staff swap stethoscopes for sports boots as 70th anniversary games kick off

Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) staff are swapping their medical instruments for athletic gear as the institution celebrates its 70th anniversary with an Inter-Directorate Fun Games event. Scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the Paa Joe Stadium in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the games will see 16 clinical and non-clinical directorates and 18 units of KATH divided into eight teams to compete in sports such as football, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, running events, and relay races.

The activities are intended to give employees a break from their demanding work, promote fitness, and enhance teamwork and relationships. Organizers have included indoor games, activities, a bouncing castle, and face painting to keep both staff and their children entertained. Dr. Yaw Opare Larbi, Deputy Medical Director and Chairman of the Planning Committee, mentioned that the event will cater to those who wish to participate with their families.

KATH is observing its 70th anniversary with the theme, “70 Years of Impacting Lives: Celebrating the Past, Repositioning for the Future.” The celebrations have included free medical outreach programs, public lectures, fundraising events, and awards ceremonies, showcasing the hospital's contributions to healthcare, training, and research in Ghana.

The highlight of the festivities is the inauguration of the Specialist Cardiac Interventional Centre being built at KATH by the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, a project symbolizing the hospital's commitment to advancing medical care. While staff members compete for trophies and recognition at the stadium, the primary aim is to cultivate unity, camaraderie, and a healthier workforce, which organizers believe will ultimately improve patient care.
