Jail and rotan for businessman who tricked director into paying over RM360,000 for AED supply

In a recent case, a businessman in Malaysia was sentenced to 14 months in jail and one stroke of the cane for defrauding a director out of RM361,150. Datuk Seri Azraie Jamaludin, aged 49, pleaded guilty to cheating the company director out of money for an automated external defibrillator (AED) supply project. Azraie and another individual at large were charged with deceiving Lim Wei Xiang, 35, into believing he had the capacity to secure the AED supply project.

The offence took place at a golf club in Kuala Lumpur between August 12 and October 22, 2024. The complainant, Lim, was duped by Azraie's claim of having connections with government agencies and the ability to secure a RM5 million project for the Health Ministry. The judge, Azrul Darus, ordered the sentence to begin immediately, citing the victim's losses as a reason for a deterrent sentence.

Azraie appealed for a lenient sentence, stating that he was supporting his family and suffering from a heart condition requiring follow-up treatment.
