Iran says struck oil tanker in Strait of Hormuz

In the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed on Friday that they had attacked an oil tanker, according to state news agency IRNA. The vessel, sailing under the flag of Togo, was targeted after a fire broke out onboard, suggesting an attempt to illegally bypass Iran's preferred maritime route.

The strait, a critical waterway for global oil trade, has been under an effective blockade by Iran since the United States and Israel launched military strikes against the country in late February. Iran now intends to impose tolls for passage through the strait, targeting ships it perceives as attempting to circumvent its designated route.

The Revolutionary Guards' statement did not provide specific details about the incident. UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a security incident in the Strait of Hormuz, 16 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, on Thursday. However, the UKMTO did not disclose the identity of the vessel involved, leaving questions about whether the incident aligns with Iran's reported attack.
