How fuel siphoning turned fatal in Eldoret: Three dead, 11 under intensive care

A 16-year-old student unleashed a shooting at a public high school in the southern Philippines on Friday, killing two fellow students and wounding eight others before taking his own life. The attack occurred at Banga National High School in Banga, South Cotabato province on Mindanao island. The deceased and the injured were all teenagers aged 14 to 17. Four of the wounded remain in critical condition.

Mayor Albert Palencia revealed that the gunman had threatened classmates during a midday break, stating he would execute his plan after lunch. Initially dismissed as a prank, the threat materialized, leading to the fatal shooting. Emergency responders responded after receiving an alert, providing urgent medical care and suspending classes across the municipality.

The Department of Education condemned the incident, expressing concern over the third fatal school shooting in the country since June. In June, a high school shooting in central Philippines resulted in three deaths, while August saw a fatal incident at a Catholic junior high school after a failed attempt to target a teacher.

Calls for stronger firearm safety and security measures have mounted, with regional leaders urging responsible firearm storage, particularly for minors. South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo stressed the need for community collaboration to address the challenge.
