GMC exploring partnership for concession at Takoradi Port – Deputy MD

Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) is considering collaborating with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to secure a concession at Takoradi Port, according to Deputy Managing Director Sun Yuanwei. The partnership would enable the port to be used for transporting mining equipment to the company and exporting refined manganese products. Yuanwei emphasized that GMC aims to keep Takoradi Port busy by having its ships return with refined ores rather than empty.

Yuanwei also revealed that GMC is working with the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) to potentially revive rail services linking mining communities. An efficient railway system, Yuanwei explained, would alleviate the burden of heavy mining traffic on Ghanaian roads while reestablishing a crucial component of the country's industrial transport infrastructure.

Furthermore, GMC is planning to establish a manganese refinery in Ghana, which Yuanwei described as a significant step towards increasing local value addition in the mining sector. Local refining would not only add value to ores but also increase revenues for the country and generate high-skilled employment opportunities.

Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson praised GMC's management for sustaining its operations and contributing to the region's economic development. The minister commended the company's long-standing presence in the Western Region and recognized its efforts to maintain and expand production. Nelson specifically highlighted the proposed manganese refinery as an important development, noting that local processing could reduce the strain on roads, particularly along the Tarkwa-Takoradi corridor.

He also welcomed the proposed railway revival, emphasizing its potential to improve transportation and stimulate economic growth in surrounding communities.
