Gillingham in lead with decided voters

Winnipeg is grappling with uncertainty as the city prepares for its municipal election in October. A new Abacus Data poll shows that a majority of voters are still undecided about who to support. Of the decided voters, 55% favor current mayor Scott Gillingham, 23% back former councillor and provincial cabinet minister Kevin Klein, and 11% support funeral director Mike Vogiatzakis.

Despite the relatively weak support for Gillingham, the poll indicates that he could be the strongest candidate currently available. The poll results are surprising, as they suggest that many voters are disengaged from the campaign. Political science expert Aaron Moore speculates that Gillingham's lead may be due to a lack of strong alternatives, rather than widespread support for him.

Some voters, like Regina transplant Richard Lambert, are dissatisfied with Gillingham's performance but feel constrained by a lack of viable alternatives. Others, like developer Paul Davis, remain committed to Gillingham despite their doubts. The low voter turnout in recent years has contributed to the current state of uncertainty, as fewer people have the opportunity to make their voices heard.
