Gaza building collapse shows dangers plaguing enclave since Israel-Hamas truce

In Gaza City, the sudden collapse of a multi-story building has once again highlighted the precarious conditions many Palestinians continue to endure, even a year after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was supposed to bring about much-needed reconstruction. Despite the truce, talks for rebuilding have yet to yield tangible progress, leaving residents to grapple with the aftermath of the ongoing conflict.

As of Wednesday, Gaza's Health Ministry reported that 21 people lost their lives in the building collapse. Amidst the tragedy, Um Mohammad Adas, whose relatives were among the victims, described the fallen structure as a makeshift shelter for those left homeless. She lamented that her surviving family members now live on the streets, lacking basic necessities, including even the clothes they wear, which were all borrowed.

Many families residing in similar damaged buildings are faced with a stark reality – their homes are unstable, and they simply cannot afford alternative accommodation. Ahmad Arafat, a resident near the site of the collapse, expressed his family's predicament, stating that they lack the financial means to relocate or secure safer housing. The rubble-strewn streets and the grim reality of life in Gaza paint a dire picture of the ongoing struggles faced by the Palestinian people in the enclave.
