From dating simulators to co-producers: AI moves to center stage in K-entertainment

The Korean television and content industry is rapidly incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into various aspects of its domain, from technical background processing to front-of-camera narrative elements. This shift is particularly evident in non-scripted entertainment, where human relationships once dominated viewer engagement.

SBS's reality show, "My AI Partner — Strange Romance," showcased the integration of humans and digital avatars in double dates, with webtoon artist Kian84 introducing his AI partner, Na-hee, to his friend Ji Ye-eun, referring to the digital persona affectionately as "honey." Despite the synthetic nature of the interaction, Ji expressed skepticism, stating that it seemed difficult to date an AI and that her emotions were genuine love.

Kian84, however, defended the psychological comfort provided by his digital companion, noting that a human connection offers a sense of security that AI cannot replicate. As the boundaries between human and AI relationships blur, Kian84 admitted to a complex inner conflict, feeling that Na-hee is becoming more human-like, while simultaneously admitting that part of him wants to remain distinct from this evolving dynamic.
