From 1MDB appeal to billion-dollar civil claims: Najib’s legal battles continue despite conditional pardon

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's legal battles persist despite a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison term under house arrest. This decision pertains to his six-year sentence in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case, involving the misappropriation of RM42 million. His sentence is set to conclude on August 23, 2028.

However, Najib is still entangled in other legal proceedings, including his appeal against a 15-year prison sentence and conviction in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case. The court found him guilty on 25 charges, including abuse of power for obtaining approximately RM2.3 billion and money laundering offenses linked to 1MDB.

Najib's sentence for these charges commences after his SRC International case is completed. Additionally, on March 31, 2026, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled in favor of SRC International, finding Najib liable for US$1.3 billion in losses due to breaches of fiduciary duties, abuse of position, and misappropriation of company funds for personal gain.

This judgment, coupled with the RM120 million Najib received from the company, totals around US$1.3 billion.
