Early voting begins in some states ahead of crucial US midterms

Early voting kicked off in certain US states on Friday, weeks before the crucial midterm elections that will decide whether Democrats can reclaim control of Congress. Concerns on voters' minds include President Donald Trump's administration, surging fuel and grocery prices, and the ongoing conflict in Iran. Virginia opened voting booths in select regions for those interested in casting ballots beforehand.

In states like Idaho, Minnesota, and South Dakota, eligible voters can obtain and vote absentee ballots in person at designated locations. State laws regarding early voting differ, with some regions not commencing the process until mid-October. The midterm elections, set for November 3, are crucial in shaping the remaining two years of Trump's presidency and the composition of Congress.

Although Republicans currently hold both the presidency and Congress, they are expected to lose seats following the midterms. Key races in Texas, Georgia, and Michigan are garnering significant attention. In Michigan, incumbent Abdul El Sayed, a Muslim American Democrat, faces off against Mike Rogers, who received Trump's endorsement.

In Texas, progressive former educator James Talarico challenges Republican incumbent Ken Paxton. Historically, the president's party usually loses congressional seats during midterms. Trump's approval rating stands at approximately 35 percent, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll.
