Beethoven and Andy Warhol: Two rebellious icons emerged from the 1987 silkscreen portrait by Warhol, offering a striking visual interpretation of the great composer. Unlike traditional historical portraits and statues, Warhol's pop art rendition used vivid colors to transform Beethoven into a modern icon. The work was conceived as a commercial piece for Warhol's New York City studio, The Factory, and produced in a limited edition of 60.

Warhol's innovative approach to Beethoven's subject matter emerged during his final years. Curators at the Beethoven House in Bonn, the composer's birthplace, unearthed rare works, including Warhol's drawings and print proofs, to showcase in the exhibition "Beethoven by Warhol." The exhibition runs until April 2027.

To create his iconic portrait, Warhol studied various depictions of Beethoven and eventually settled on the 1820 portrait by Joseph Karl Stieler. Warhol adopted Stieler's graphic design, altered the colors, and incorporated a handwritten Beethoven score. Instead of using the notes from Beethoven's "Credo" from the "Missa Solemnis," Warhol chose music from the "Moonlight Sonata." This musical element underscores Warhol's intention to make Beethoven's rebellious spirit resonate through sound.

Notably, Warhol designed record covers for over 50 records over three decades, reflecting his musical tastes. While Beethoven is not among the covers, they provide insight into his musical preferences. The exhibition "Beethoven by Warhol" opens at the Beethoven House in Bonn for the upcoming 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death in 2027, highlighting the composer's enduring legacy and rebellious spirit.
