Ajit Agarkar’s future as chairman of selectors in balance

Speculation over Ajit Agarkar's future as chairman of the senior men's selection committee continues to grow, with the BCCI holding back on announcing any decisions. In a statement after the board's 95th Annual General Meeting, secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the BCCI has 15 days left to reach a verdict on the matter. Saikia declined to comment on whether the BCCI was scouting for alternative candidates for the chairman's position.

The Indian Express had reported earlier in August that BCCI officials would meet Agarkar for a one-year extension following India's tour of Sri Lanka, amid differences between the selectors and the chairman regarding Rohit Sharma's ODI future ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Agarkar has been in the role since July 2023 and is credited with India's success in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Saikia also addressed the ongoing issue of India's Asia Cup trophies, stating that both would eventually reach the BCCI's Mumbai office in Wankhede Stadium. The BCCI has also increased daily fees for domestic umpires and modified their grading system, while match referees will now receive higher fees based on their performance evaluations.

The BCCI remains committed to complying with the new Sports Act, awaiting a Central government notification before making any necessary adjustments.
