Agriculture Ministry launches Phase I of tomato production initiative

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has initiated Phase I of a strategic project to enhance local tomato production and diminish Ghana's reliance on imported tomatoes. This endeavor was inaugurated on September 17 in the Volta Region by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, in collaboration with Farmmate Ghana Limited. Deputy Minister John Dumelo, a key contributor to the ministry's agricultural development initiatives, was also present at the launch.

Ghana has consistently depended on imported tomatoes and tomato products to complement local production, a dependency that impacts the nation's foreign exchange reserves and the earnings of local farmers. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to bolster Ghana's domestic tomato industry, decrease the cost of tomato imports, and foster sustainable agricultural progress.

The collaboration between the Ministry and Farmmate Ghana Limited combines governmental and private-sector resources to tackle the challenges inherent in tomato production within Ghana. This program is anticipated to bolster agricultural productivity and create enduring opportunities for farmers engaged in tomato cultivation. The Volta Region, noted for its substantial agricultural potential, is the inaugural site for the project's implementation, as stakeholders strive to enhance tomato production and elevate farmers' livelihoods.

Moreover, this initiative aligns with the larger objective of transforming Ghana's agricultural sector by fostering productive alliances between government and private-sector entities. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture and Farmmate Ghana Limited aim to contribute to the diminution of Ghana's tomato import expenditure while fostering local production and sustainable agricultural advancement.
