Agbogloshie waste evacuation: Full-capacity haulage to take place at night – Mahama

Agbogbloshie, a landfill site plagued by massive waste accumulation, is set to undergo an evacuation exercise that will span 90 days. The National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise, led by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to transfer approximately one million tonnes of waste from Agbogbloshie to the Adepa Waste Centre at Nsawam.

This initiative forms part of the government's strategy to mitigate environmental and sanitation issues caused by the waste crisis at the Agbogbloshie site. Mahama emphasized that the success of the evacuation will not only rely on the removal of waste debris but also on preventing a recurrence of the waste situation. He instructed the Minister for Local Government to ensure the site remains free from further dumping post-evacuation.

In addition to the evacuation, the Ghana Armed Forces will provide support to prevent illegal dumping and secure the cleared site. This combined effort involves cooperation among government bodies, local authorities, security agencies, and residents to ensure the long-term management and protection of the site. The evacuation, a crucial step in addressing waste management challenges nationwide, underscores the government's commitment to improving environmental conditions and sanitation standards.
