President John Dramani Mahama announced on September 18 that the Agbogbloshie landfill will be transformed into an industrial park and host a major textile factory. The government aims to create jobs for young people through this development. On September 18, Mahama officially launched the waste evacuation process, moving accumulated waste from Agbogbloshie to the Adepa Engineered Landfill Site near Nsawam.
The waste will be transported for controlled disposal, compacting, and covering. Transport will occur at night to minimize disruption and facilitate the removal of up to one million tonnes of waste. Supported by the Ghana Armed Forces and equipment from the District Road Improvement Programme, including tipper trucks and excavators, the process is projected to take around 90 days.
To prevent future dumping, the government will implement measures, with the Ghana Armed Forces protecting the reclaimed land and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly enforcing sanitation by-laws. Mahama urged Agbogbloshie and Old Fadama residents to cooperate with military personnel, DRIP operators, and assembly teams during the exercise.
The government's comprehensive waste management strategy involves providing waste bins, transfer stations, more landfill sites, and recycling plants to enhance Ghana's sanitation system.
