Abim calls for theatre producers to apologise over alleged Rukun Negara mockery

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) has demanded that those responsible for a controversial theatre production mocking the Rukun Negara issue a public apology, according to Abim president Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin. Samsudin stated that the performance should not be considered an act of artistic courage, but rather a moral failure that could potentially weaken the bonds of unity among Malaysians.

He emphasized that the Rukun Negara is not merely a slogan or a stage gag, but a solemn pledge of citizenship that represents the country's shared values and experiences. Samsudin clarified that while the youth organization respects artistic expression, it is not a license to disregard one's responsibilities. He stressed that there is a distinction between criticizing the nation's shortcomings in adhering to the Rukun Negara and ridiculing the Rukun Negara itself.

The authorities should conduct a thorough, impartial investigation into the matter, he added, in accordance with Malaysian laws. Samsudin reminded the public that during a period of growing division and mistrust among communities, the arts should serve to enlighten minds and reinforce human values, rather than contribute to the erosion of the very foundations that bind the nation together.
