43 suspects arraigned over killing of police officer at Gindabour

The Savannah Regional Police Command has brought 43 suspects before the Buipe Magistrate Court in connection with the murder of General Constable Redeemer Owusu at Gindabour. They were arraigned on Friday and face charges of murder and abetting the murder of a public officer. Additionally, a male suspect arrested on Thursday night with a locally made pistol and ammunition will be arraigned separately before the Damongo Circuit Court, facing charges of murder and unlawful firearm possession.

The 43 suspects include individuals arrested following the September 16 incident at Gindabour, where the police officer was killed in a mob attack. Police had previously announced the arrest of 36 suspects related to the attack and stated they were cooperating with the ongoing investigation. A bus carrying the suspects to court was captured on camera by JoyNews cameras on Friday afternoon. Some relatives, particularly those from Damongo, were visibly emotional as the suspects were taken into court.

The incident occurred after the death of a teacher, Seidu Abu, following an encounter with police officers at Gindabour. The teacher was riding a motorbike when he came into conflict with the police, ultimately resulting in his death. This event triggered outrage among some residents, who subsequently attacked police officers, leading to the death of General Constable Owusu. The bodies of both the deceased officer and the motorbike rider were transported to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Inspector-General of Police Patrick Tetteh Yohunu has arrived in Gindabour alongside personnel from Police Headquarters. He is set to meet with the chiefs of Gindabour and Kog, who are currently in the community with their immediate families following widespread unrest. The police have deployed investigators, intelligence officers, and reinforcement teams to the area to assist in investigations and maintain security.
