Xander Bogaerts helps power a 7-run 2nd inning as the Padres roll past the reeling Rockies 9-2

In a 9-2 victory on Thursday, the San Diego Padres showcased a dominant performance, led by Xander Bogaerts' stellar display. Bogaerts notched a home run and an RBI triple in the second inning, propelling the Padres to a commanding lead. He came tantalizingly close to the fourth cycle in Padres history, just one hit short. Bogaerts struck out looking in the sixth inning and entered the ninth swinging, but couldn't add to his impressive night.

The Padres, who took three out of four from Colorado, now sit 4 games ahead of idle Arizona for the last National League wild-card spot.

Starting pitcher Michael King, who had given up a leadoff triple to Jake McCarthy and a run-scoring single to Connor Norby, settled down in the sixth inning. King went the distance in his staff-leading 31st start of the season, allowing only two runs. Dustin Harris added to the Padres' offensive firepower with three singles and three RBIs. The Padres' offensive output was extraordinary, with eight extra-base hits throughout the game.

Meanwhile, Colorado's Tanner Gordon struggled mightily, allowing 10 hits and seven runs over the first three innings. His performance extended a somber streak for Rockies starters, now at 20 games without a win. Colorado needs to rally with a 7-2 finish to avert a fourth consecutive 100-loss season. The Padres will face RHP Nick Pivetta (2-2, 3.60 ERA) on Friday, as they prepare to host Miami.

For the Rockies, the next challenge lies in starting a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners, with a starter yet to be named.
