Workers warn over delayed 40% allowance, promotion arrears

Civil servants have written to the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, warning about the delayed implementation of the 40% peculiarity allowance and outstanding promotion arrears. The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) urged the minister to urgently address the issues, warning that continued delay would fuel unrest among public servants.

The council acknowledged the recent payment of two months' outstanding wage award but stressed that the 40% allowance remained unresolved. The council praised the minister for his response to their earlier appeal but noted that the two months' outstanding wage award was paid within the agreed timeline. However, the workers emphasized that the 40% peculiarity allowance, backed by a circular from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, was yet to be implemented.

The council urged the minister to act urgently, rejecting the possibility of financial constraints delaying implementation. They demanded the payment of promotion arrears for batches seven and nine and the immediate implementation of the 40% allowance, which was effective from May 1, 2026. The council expressed concern over the growing dissatisfaction among workers, warning of potential unrest if the issues were not addressed promptly.
