Winnipeg Jets scramble for a ‘resolution’ as Connor Hellebuyck trade talks drag on

Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff confirmed on Thursday that the team has been attempting a trade for star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck since he requested one. Hellebuyck, who finished third in the voting for the 2024-25 MVP award, expressed his wish to be traded after Winnipeg missed the playoffs during the first year of a seven-year, $69.5 million contract extension he signed in October 2023.

The team's search for a resolution that benefits both parties has been ongoing for some time now. Hellebuyck's absence is a significant blow for a squad that finished 35-35-12 in the previous season, just one year after capturing the NHL's top regular-season record and the Presidents’ Trophy. Hellebuyck, a native of Michigan, has played his entire NHL career with the Jets and has won the gold medal with the U.S. team at the 2024 Olympics.

Cheveldayoff noted that Hellebuyck's trade request was initially brought up in April, following Winnipeg's playoff absence. He emphasized that the team has been dealing with the situation for a considerable amount of time and is currently focused on finding a resolution that suits both parties. However, Cheveldayoff declined to disclose the names of the teams he has spoken with and rejected any pressure to make a move.

Hellebuyck has a no-movement clause in his contract, which enables him to veto any trade proposal he disagrees with.
