Winnipeg Jets scramble for a 'resolution' as Connor Hellebuyck trade talks drag on

Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff revealed Thursday that the team has been attempting to trade star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck since he requested a trade move. This comes after Hellebuyck was suspended for not reporting to training camp. The first preseason game is slated for Saturday, with the regular season opener against Boston on October 2nd.

Speaking one day after the suspension, Cheveldayoff stated that the team is committed to being competitive and pushing for regular wins. He explained that they kept the trade request quiet, partly due to Hellebuyck's request and his desire to be traded for a few years. Hellebuyck signed a seven-year, $69.5 million contract extension in October 2023, expressing his desire to remain with the Jets and believe in their potential to win the Stanley Cup.

Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, has played his entire NHL career with the Jets and was named league MVP in the 2024-25 season. He also helped the U.S. team win a gold medal at the Olympics in February. Cheveldayoff mentioned that the trade request was first made in April, following the team's playoff absence, and that they received no warning about Hellebuyck's agent going public with the details.

The team has spoken with multiple potential trade candidates but has not confirmed any specific teams. Hellebuyck has a no-movement clause in his contract, allowing him to veto any trade proposal he disagrees with. He previously faced backlash for his Olympic performance and his visit to Donald Trump's White House to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, accusing the team of providing inadequate support for his family, including additional security.

Cheveldayoff remains focused on finding a new hockey home for Hellebuyck, with Stuart Skinner acting as the starting goalie for now. Cheveldayoff emphasized that Hellebuyck remains a part of the team until he is no longer, expressing his commitment to supporting him during this transition.
