West Nile virus death toll rises to four

The Dutch public health institute RIVM has reported a fourth death in the country from West Nile virus, contracted through a blood transfusion. A person with pre-existing health issues may have died directly from the virus. So far, 28 West Nile cases have been confirmed, with ten new patients identified in the past week. Most infections are attributed to mosquito bites.

While West Nile virus is generally harmless, 20% of those infected experience mild flu-like symptoms. The elderly and individuals with health vulnerabilities face the highest risk of death. Additionally, 30 reports of horses infected with West Nile virus have been recorded since September 10, totaling 88 cases this year. Around 100 bird cases have also been detected.
