Warsaw Signals Readiness for US Army Base in Poland

US President Donald Trump has announced that progress has been made toward establishing a US Army base in Poland, with Polish President Karol Nawrocki confirming that Warsaw is prepared to support the project and identify the best possible location. Trump stated that the location could be revealed soon if an agreement is reached, crediting Nawrocki's leadership.

Nawrocki responded publicly two hours later, emphasizing the Polish government's commitment to strengthening defense cooperation with Washington and stating their readiness to find the ideal site for the US Army base.

Despite the promising developments, no official agreement has been finalized yet. Trump described the proposed facility as a potentially historic step for the US-Polish alliance. Currently, about 10,000 US troops are deployed in Poland on a rotational basis. Poland has long advocated for a permanent US military presence, particularly since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, arguing that such a move would bolster NATO's eastern flank.

In June, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz indicated to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that the US Department of Defense was open to Poland's proposal for a permanent US military presence. This announcement came ahead of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's scheduled visit to Ukraine on September 18, where he plans to meet with his Slovak counterpart during a summit. Tusk warned that Russia's war could potentially spill beyond Ukraine's borders, directly affecting Poland and other NATO members.

On the same day as Trump's announcement, Polish military aircraft scrambled as a jet-powered drone approached Polish territory, landing about 4 kilometers from Poland. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda reported that a Russian Gerbera drone entered the country's airspace from Belarus on September 15, carrying an explosive device, before being shot down by NATO fighter jets.

A Russian jet-powered Shahed entered Romanian airspace on September 8 and evaded two scrambled F-18s before crashing in Moldova. These incidents underscore Tusk's previous concerns about Russia potentially increasing hybrid attacks against Ukraine's Western allies while denying responsibility or portraying them as accidental.
