US to allow Iranian leaders to attend UN General Assembly

The United States has announced it will permit senior Iranian officials to participate in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to a State Department spokesperson on Thursday. This decision comes amid ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran, with intermittent negotiations ongoing to attempt an end to the strife.

The delegation, which would include Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, will be granted visas in accordance with the U.S.’s hosting duties at the global body.

However, this accommodation is not without restrictions. The delegation will be subject to travel limitations and prohibitions on the acquisition of luxury items and certain goods, as per U.S. policy. The delegation is anticipated to be smaller than the one sent last year.

The U.S. government has previously barred Iran’s delegation from accessing certain facilities, limiting their travel to designated areas such as the United Nations headquarters, the Iranian UN mission, the UN ambassador’s residence, and John F Kennedy Airport. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on the recent development.

Under the 1947 U.N. headquarters agreement, the U.S. is typically obliged to permit access to the United Nations for foreign diplomats. However, Washington reserves the right to deny visas on grounds of security, terrorism, or foreign policy concerns. On Wednesday, the Trump administration stated it would deny entry to Palestinian officials for the UN meeting, continuing a restriction in place since last year.

This decision was made due to actions undertaken by Palestinian officials to bring the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to international forums, including filing cases against Israel at international tribunals. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was among those denied a visa in this context.
